Setting up the Echo Dot is a breeze. For power, most cars nowadays have a USB port, and the alternative is that it also works off any mobile battery pack. For sound output, you can connect via the supplied line out cable, or pair it with your car's Bluetooth system. For Wifi, you can set up your mobile phone as a portable hotspot.
Once set up, you can refer to my YouTube video above of how it handles standard music playing and calendar management functionalities. Personally, being able to play any music you can think is a godsend when having to deal with a wailing baby in the back seat.
The Smart Home possibilities are where the features really gets exciting though. In my video, I demonstrated how I can turn on the air-conditioning by using voice triggers to my Logitech Harmony Hub. Using the same method, I can trigger anything that I want when I am still a few kilometres out away from home. Turn on the lights, garage door, speakers, anything really.
If you refer to my previous video of SmartThings Notifications from the Amazon Echo, I would be able to employ the same method to get alerts in my car for when my kids reach home, when the door is left open, or any other such useful home information!
Right now the Amazon Echo Dot is still in limited release with a 2 month waiting list, so for those Singaporeans who are interested in buying this, do feel free to drop me a message to see if I still have stock. Cheers!
